Jazz pianist Chick Corea's wonderful jazz record Tones for Joan's Bones is his first record as a leader of a hard bop group. Besides his piano melodies, tenor player Joe Farrell and trumpeter Woody Shaw adding an extra dimension to the different compositions. "Straight Up and Down" is the most ambitious track, the most on the edge, but a lot of other songs also showing the true skills of the different band members. The distinct Latin tinge of Corea's music can be found all over the record. Anybody with an interest in this vital and exciting jazz period will find this session indispensable. Chick Corea had played piano for such jazz greats as Miles Davis before he started working as a leader of his own groups.
